Case Study: Feliz

Feliz arrived at Heartsong with a guarded prognosis following multiple unsuccessful surgeries for a septic tendon sheath infection caused by a fence injury. With euthanasia recommended, her guardian sought another path—one rooted in hope, collaboration, and the quiet strength of a mare carrying new life within her.

Initial Condition:

At intake, Feliz was battling a life-threatening infection while in foal. Her system was compromised, her mobility limited, and her overall outlook uncertain. The primary goals were to stabilize her condition, protect her pregnancy, and support her immune and lymphatic systems for healing.

Treatment & Approach:

Her rehabilitation combined conventional and holistic therapies in a carefully sequenced plan:

  • Daily medication and meticulous wound care to manage infection safely during pregnancy

  • Customized whole-food nutrition with pregnancy-safe herbal support

  • Therapeutic modalities including laser, red light, BEMER, tuning forks, and craniosacral therapy to stimulate cellular healing

  • Herbal poultices to reduce swelling and draw out infection

  • Controlled movement and therapeutic exercise to prevent adhesions and restore mobility

  • Animal communication and enrichment activities to support her emotional wellbeing

Outcome:

After six weeks of intensive care, Feliz cleared the infection and began rebuilding strength and confidence. She returned home healthy and comfortable, where her recovery continued under shared guidance between her guardian, Heartsong, and Frankly Sound Equine.

Reflection:

Feliz’s story is a powerful reminder of what can unfold when compassion and collaboration guide care. Her recovery, and the birth of her healthy foal, Rose, reflect the profound capacity for healing that exists when we listen deeply to the horse and honor the whole being.
